Witnessing the End of an Era

Today's ice hockey game between Canada and Russia was "supposed" to be the gold medal game. But it came too early. Only one of these two powerhouses can move on and it wouldn't be an easy one. At least it wasn't expected to be this easy. Canada won the game with a 7-3 score over Russia. Canada got 4 goals during the FIRST period. This was DISMAL for Russia! The world champions. I'm even embarrassed for them. Heck, the Vancouver Olympics has been dismal for Russia. And I'm not happy about it. It's not because Russia lost, it's because how they lost. They just gave it away. If this is what they called their best, then they should go back to the kiddie table. To lose is one thing, but to lose by 4 points is just...nuts.
Make no mistake, though. I am VERY excited for Canada's win. They brought the house down tonight! They won against Germany yesterday and continued to plow their next competition. Like dust bunnies. Losing the preliminary round to the USA(go team!) was just the fuel they needed to add to their fire.
I was expecting a scoreless period, 2 or 3 goals, then a tie and overtime, overtime, overtime. This was supposed to be the game of all hockey games! The world expected more than this. Russia's goalie, Evgeni Nabokov, needs contacts or something. Yes, the puck went the OTHER way, Nabby. And Alex Ovechkin? The "gifted" one?? WHERE were you during the whole game? Actually, Sidney Crosby didn't do much either. But the rest of the Canadian team seemed have to done OK anyway. Canada's roster is filled with good players and not just back up dancers to make their star player(ahem, Ovie) look good.
I got so riled up about this pathetic game that I didn't even get a chance to celebrate USA's win over Switzerland. Score? 2-0. And the Swiss did not go down without a fight. Both teams, their goalies, offense, defense, everyone was superb.

Canada and USA makes it to the semis!! Will there be another face-off between them? I'm looking forward to it. We'll find out on the 26th.
