Virtue and Moir

Last night, Canada won their first gold medal in ice dancing! Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir skated in front of their hometown crowd and brought them to their feet. Some of the other competitors thought they had a home advantage and others thought they were the best and that's why they won. I watched Virtue and Moir's programs and they did it so seamlessly and effortlessly with so much love and trust for each other. Yes, I actually got that out from watching them for 5 minutes! They look like they're in love but they don't know it yet. They are so beautiful to watch. Virtue and Moir were just all around too good. They deserved their gold. Awesome.

One of the other competing pairs is brother and sister, John and Sinead Kerr from Great Britain. They did phenomenal skating to Linkin Park's "Crawling." Who'd have thought you can skate to that?!? And so elegantly! And SHE lifted him up at one point! I couldn't turn away from them. Then came the French team, Isabelle Delobel and Oliver Schoenfelder. Eh, they were not bad. When their scores came up, I was surprised to see them placing ahead of the Kerrs. Then the Italian team, Federica Faiella and Massimo Scali performed. I got bored within 10 seconds. Yet they scored ahead of the French team, who's ahead of the Kerrs! Shouldn't ice dancing be entertaining to the audience as well? The Kerrs ended up in 8th place, plus one fan.

The American team, Meryl Davis and Charlie White won the silver. They've been ice dancing together since before they were 10. The first few years, Meryl didn't even talk to Charlie because she was so shy! They're one of the youngest teams here and they KNOW what they want. Their interviews were just oozing with confidence. Now they're Olympic medalists, and talk a lot.

The Russians, Oksana Domnina and Maxim Shabalin placed in bronze medal position. They smashed the compulsory tango skate. Their tango was so perfect, mature and sexy. But they got the most attention for their "costumes" for their original dance portion. They dressed as aboriginals with leaves and face paint and crazy moves like him pulling her hair and mugging for the camera...ugh. It was a mess.

I wasn't that interested in much of figure skating except for the Ladies during the last few Olympics. But this Olympics' figure skating has been quite fun to watch, as with most of the other sports. One of my friends even confessed to finding this year's curling competitions, "oddly enjoyable."
