Ok. Not only is 19 year-old Kim Yu-Na beautiful, famous, and probably the most beloved athlete of South Korea, she also just made history by earning the highest short program score, a 78.5, under the new judging system. She broke her own record. That is almost 5 points ahead of the next best program of the night by Mao Asada of Japan. Kim skated to the James Bond theme with confidence, playfulness, and a lot of flirt. Just like any other Bond girl. If she medals (any color), Kim will be the first South Korean to do so who is not in short track or speedskating. I haven't seen her skate recently, but all the hype and hoopla around her made this a must-see program. And she knocked it out of the ball park. Holy mackerel. I do think her score was too high...and Mao's was too low. Both skated cleanly and with major technical and artistic skills. The difference between their scores is too wide according to how both of them have skated. We'll see what the free skate brings forth.
What did you think when you started to notice American skater Mirai's nose bleeding in the middle of the program!? Oy! Mirai Nagasu, the 16 year old(I have books older than her) continued to skate, and skated her personal best with a bloody nose. Now that's impressive. There are people who can barely walk and talk at the same time. Rachel Flatt also did a great job, considering how young and inexperienced the American team is compared to the other veterans in the field. Nagasu placed 6th and Flatt is in 5th. These are our young guns who are on their way to become the next big cheese. Maybe not at this Olympics, but definitely the next. You can see it!
Happy New Year!
